St. Phillip North
Elmore "Tamo" Charles has served the people of Antigua & Barbuda in the Senate since 2004.
Mr. Charles was born and raised in Newfield Village in the St Philip’s North Constituency, and is deeply connected to the community.
After primary school, he attended the Seventh Day Adventist School and completed secondary school in St. Thomas. He studied business administration at the University of the Virgin Islands and completed his education at the Institute of Design Construction Technology in New York. He worked in New York and St. Thomas prior to returning to Antigua.
A self-made, successful businessman, Mr. Charles started a number of successful businesses, one of which was Antigua Concrete Services in 1998, and formed a number of companies in construction and development that were equally successful. Mr Charles feels that is reputation as a fair and progressive businessman his sound business acumen would help to make government more efficient and more service oriented.
An avid sportsman, Mr. Charles played cricket and football for the Newfield School and village teams. His popular nickame, "Tamo", was given to him by the Australian fast bowler, Jeff Thompson, while Charles was playing international cricket.
From 2004-2007, Mr. Charles served as an Antigua Labour Party Senator in the Upper House in Parliament. He resigned this seat and his membership of the Party because of what he witnessed as the oppressive and dictatorial style of the ALP hierarchy, and its members’ focus on exclusively enriching themselves and their cronies at the expense of the people of Antigua and Barbuda. In 2008, Mr. Charles was selected to serve as a Senator in the United Progressive Party Administration.
Mr. Charles is a strong and independent leader who speaks truth to power and is not afraid to stand up for what is right. He also believes in putting the interest of the people ahead of the party.
He firmly believes in building a society rooted in the idea that individuals should take responsibility for their own actions. He also believes that people are born with an independent spirit and that society should encourage people to achieve their goals with very little dependence on government.
