St. John's City West
Colin Derrick serves in the Senate and as the Minister of Justice.
Colin "Counselor" Derrick was born on 23rd November 1957 in Redruth, Cornwall, England. He attended the Foundation Mixed Primary School and the St. Joseph's Academy. He has obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) and a Barrister-at-Law (Middle Temple Inn) and is now a lawyer by profession.
Colin Derrick is one of the founding members of the United Progressive Party. He is now the Vice-Chairman of the UPP and the Party's candidate for the St. John's City West constituency. He is a member of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association, The Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association, the Spring Gardens Moravian Church and the Harmonites International Steel Orchestra.
He is married to Maureen, a native of Grenada, and is the father of two; Zahra and Kareem Derrick. He is ready, willing and able to represent the St. John's City West constituency.
Getting the Job Done in St. John's City West
- Removal of Abandoned and derelict vehicles. In collaboration with the Central Board of Health, dozens of vehicles have been removed from the roadsides and open lots in the Villa-Point Community, resulting in a cleaner, safer environment;
- Villa Community Computer Access Center. A thirty (30) seat modern computer classroom with high speed Internet access has been opened at the Villa Primary School; this facility has enabled teachers, students, senior citizens and other members of the Villa-Point Community to acquire important computer and Information Technology skills; the center also provides continuing education opportunities to all ages of residents in the Point and Villa Communities.
- School Meals Programme. The Villa Primary School was one of the first schools to introduce and pioneer the National School Meals Programme, providing a nutritious, well-balanced lunch meals to students and teachers. Consequently enhancing the performance of both students and teachers.
- Cleaning & Maintenance of Villa Primary School Compound. In marked contrast to what used to occur prior to 23rd March, 2004, the Villa Primary School grounds and facilities are now regularly maintained, resulting in a cleaner and healthier environment for students, teachers and members of the Community.
- School Uniform Grants. This Governmental programme is a first in the educational history of Antigua and Barbuda; hundreds of families from the Villa-Point Community have received an annual School Uniform Grant for each child that is enrolled in school.
- Lighting of Blackburne Park. After years of neglect, the refurbishment of this important community facility has begun with the completion of the fencing and lighting of the playing fields; it will be completed with first rate sporting facilities and amenities which will include recreational facilities to encourage family outings and activities.
- Road Enhancement and Gutter and Culvert Repairs. From June 2004, roadside teams have been employed in cleaning the Community roads and gutters, resulting in a cleaner environment; a continuous programme to upgrade the roads, gutters, culverts and sidewalks is in progress.
- Employment Opportunities at the Deep Water Harbour. The expansion and modernization of the Port will result in many residents of the Villa-Point Community obtaining first-choice meaningful employment to enable them to provide for their families and manifestly improve their quality of life;
- Computers for Weslyan Junior Academy. No child in the Villa-Point Community will be left behind and this includes children attending private schools; for example, Weslyan Junior Academy was the recipient of several computers and printers to ensure that the children attending the school are given the opportunity to become fully computer literate;
- The Beacon Light Academy (Nazarene) pre-school also received donation of computers to assist its students;
- Assisted many students from the Point and Villa Communities to access and secure scholarships for higher education from donor countries such as China, Cuba, Mexico, Canada;
- Established the first “Neighbourhood Watch Committee” to address the crime incidents in the Community. The Committee has held periodic Town Hall meetings to update residents on its successes and challenges and further enhance neighbourly co-operation in its objectives. The committee’s work has contributed significantly to the reduction of crime into the constituency.
