Harold Lovell serves the people of St. John’s City East in the House of Representatives and sits in Government as the Minister of Tourism, Aviation, Culture & the Environment. In his ministerial capacity, he is responsible for overseeing tourism, international transportation, meteorology, V.C. Bird International Airport, civil aviation, the St. John's Development Corporation, Environmental Protection, cultural matters, among others.
Harold Lovell was born on September 27th 1955 in St. John's city. He attended the Antigua Grammar School and obtained his tertiary education at the University of the West Indies where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Geography and Geology and was Vice President of the Guild of Undergraduates. In 1984, he went on to study at the Thames Valley University and Middle Temple, where he qualified as a Barrister-at-Law.
He also holds a Master of Jurisprudence Degree from the University of Birmingham. While in England, he served on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Advisory Council for Leicestershire, England.
Mr. Lovell’s professional life started at the Antigua Public Utilities Authority. He entered the teaching profession in 1978 at the Antigua Grammar School and then The Antigua State College. At the height of the momentous teacher's struggle in 1979, after being arrested and beaten, Lovell was fired by the Bird regime for his pursuit of justice. Harold Lovell has served at various times as General Secretary and then Vice Chairman of the Antigua Caribbean Liberation Movement (ACLM), General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, and Vice Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP).
