St. John’s Rural South

Winston Williams Jr. represents the St. John’s Rural South constituency, and serves as Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs.

Born on 30 April 1973, Williams attended the Antigua Seventh Day Adventist School (Primary & Secondary). He is a Sales and Export Consultant and a Politician by profession. He conducts public relations and marketing for businesses at various operational levels.

As a Seventh Day Adventist and member of the Tindale SDA Church, he developed a profound love for youth development and gained leadership skills from his involvement in various church-related activities.

Williams later took his expertise and skills to the Rotaract Club of Antigua and Barbuda, where he served as Vice President and Director of Community Development for many years.

Mr. Williams has worked on the drafting of the Child Care Act and is the president of the Big Brother, Big Sister programs. He is the Founder and President of the Groves Community Club. He has participated in feeding programs for under privileged children and the elderly, School motivation programs aiming to help slow students and he is the co-founder of the Community Computer Program.

Recognizing his inclination towards leadership, the then leader of the United Progressive Party; Hon. Baldwin Spencer invited Williams to join the political organization in 1997. Just a year later, he was appointed Chairman of the UPP’s Youth Arm, the Progressive Youth Movement from 1998-2002, and created an Educational Programme for CXC candidates.

He was a member of the Big Brother, Big Sister Child Care Program, the Duke of Edinburgh Hurts Leadership training project, the Board of Directors of Crusader Publications LTD and The board of the Collaborative Committee for the Promotion of Emotional Health in children (CCOPE).

In 2004, Winston Williams Jr. defeated veteran politician, Vere Bird Jr., who previously held the seat for 28 unbroken years, and was elected Member of Parliament for St. John’s Rural South. In addition to his Sports and Youth Affairs portfolio, he is also a member of the Public Accounts committee.

In addition to carrying out a very busy schedule, Williams, who was awarded the Young Politician of the Year in 2005, is completing online studies towards a Master’s Degree in Political Science.

Getting the Job Done for St. John’s Rural South

Promises Made - Promises Delivered

  • Constructed the Niah Roberts Youth and Sports Empowerment Centre at Lower Ottos.
  • Established two constituency branch offices (in Nut Grove and in Golden Grove New Extension) which provide venues for the MP to meet with the people of Rural South and address their concerns.
  • Established two fully operational libraries (Lower Ottos Community Centre and the Nut Grove Branch office).
  • Collaborated with the Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Telecommunications to set up two Computer Access Centres.
  • Collaborated with the Minister of Agriculture to set up a School Meals Centre at the Golden Grove Primary School.
  • Implemented the Rural South Empowerment Programme which offers Clothing &Textiles and Craft classes at the Lower Ottos, Sewing and Craft Centres.
  • Created the Rural South Employment Database, which has assisted numerous constituents in obtaining meaningful jobs.
  • Set up the Rural South Home Help Programme, which offers daily assistance to the elderly and the disabled.
  • Initiated a street naming and sign erection project.
  • Created and still manages the Rural South Neighborhood Watch.
  • Created the Community Beautification Programme, which provides plants, trees and periodic removal of bulk waste. The programme also offers regular assistance to the elderly and the disabled with cleaning their properties.
  • Established the Rural South Adult and Youth Literacy Programme, and personally teaches all classes.
  • Established a Fire Victims Relief Programme, which has assisted over a dozen families.
  • Hosts the Annual Rural South Children’s Party every New Year’s Day. Now in its 8th year, the event caters for more than 1,000 children.
  • Hosts an Annual Mother’s Day Appreciation Dinner.
  • Established an Annual Children’s Summer Camp, now in its 4th Year.
  • Provides financial assistance for educational supplies for needy children.
  • Assists 23 adults with higher education scholarships.
  • Created an official Rural South website and issues constituents with email addresses, upon requests.
