UPP Cries Vandalism

The ruling United Progressive Party is accusing opposition Antigua Labour Party supporters of vandalizing the party's signs erected on the major highways.
The UPP said its roads signs have been willfully demolished in several constituencies around the island.
UPP candidate for St John's City South Senator Lenworth Johnson is not taking this lying down. Johnson invited the media to tour Belmont and Briggins, where almost all of the signs have been demolished, destroyed or defaced.

"This can only be the work of Antigua Labour Party agents," said Johnson. "I have written an official letter of complaint to the Electoral Commission to appeal to the persons guilty of this act to desist from doing so."

"The ALP has nothing to fear with their signs. Our people are not defacing them. For agents of the Antigua Labour Party to do this is criminal and unacceptable," said Johnson, while pointing to a sign that had been uprooted from its cement foundation.

Popular talk show host at the UPP-owned Crusader Radio, Vaughn Walter, accompanied Johnson on the tour and said Belmont and Briggins are not the only areas affected.

"On the Marble Hill roads, behind West Indies Oil, the signs have been ripped right down the center with a knife and plucked out of the ground," an irate Walter said. "When you go south in Hilson Baptiste's area, from Jennings to Bolans, and even further, it's the same thing."

"They have resorted to this type of behaviour because they smell defeat," he said, referring to the opposition party. "We will remain calm and peaceful because we are a peaceful set of people and we are confident that we will win."

Walter is calling on members of the public to be their brother's keeper and to report such incidents to the Electoral Commission when they see them occurring.
