Police Part Parham Billboard Fracas

The police were called to Parham Corner late Saturday afternoon to quell a disturbance between factions of the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) and the opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP), allegedly as a result of billboard destruction.

Challenger in the St Peter's constituency, Senator Joanne Massiash, was in deep discussion with law enforcement officials, while heated conversations emanated from several smaller groups huddled close by.

Reports are that a billboard erected immediately facing the entrance to Parham was reportedly vandalized by ALP supporters, as it was said to be shrouding that of the constituency's incumbent, Asot Michael.

The billboard was to bear Massiah's image, but was blank at the time of being tampered with.

Speaking on the incident, noted sign maker Ludwig "LMR" Reynolds, who was commissioned to erect the billboards, said, "I decided there was no problem in assisting Joanne in having that billboard to be utilized."

He continued, "And this is the second time. I just don't understand what is really going on; it's just not really in keeping with the spirit of what's going on. I think that whoever is in charge of the whole operation is going somewhat mad."

Up to early evening, many of Massiah's supporters were still attempting to re-erect the billboard, while ALP supporters loitered
around.

In another incident, a man wearing a T-shirt bearing the picture of ALP candidate Dean Jonas and sporting an ALP hat, was arrested today after he was allegedly seen destroying a billboard bearing the image of Dr Errol Cort.

The police were notified by eyewitnesses who were able to give an apt description of the man. He was subsequently found at his home and taken into custody.
