Political Arson Attempt In Grays Farm

Although the two major political parties have condemned acts of violence, this continues to be a problem during the period leading up to general elections, constitutionally due by June 2009.
The most recent incident of politically motivated violence involves an arson attempt on the United Progressive Party's St John's Rural West Constituency Branch, in Perry Bay, Grays Farm.
According to reports, a man attempted to burn the building at around 9 pm Saturday.

Senator Anthony Stuart, a member of the Rural West branch, confirmed that the incident occurred, but was reluctant to give any further information. He did, however say a suspect was in police custody.

"I would not want to prejudice the investigation by commenting on the matter," he said. "I would prefer to save comments on the issue for a later date."

Stuart added that the building had been broken into a week before.

Caribarena made several attempts to reach the police for comment on this matter, but was unsuccessful.

A recent UPP whistle-stop on January 22 resulted in a stone throwing incident near the Ya So So Bakery in Liberta after supporters in the motorcade clashed with ALP supporters standing beside the street.

The incident resulted in at least three people injured and a number of vehicles damaged.
