UPP Education Roll Call

The United Progressive Party (UPP), within less than five years in government, raised the bar of the literacy level among nationals with the implementation and execution of social programmes targeting youths in various constituencies.

Minister of Education Bertrand Joseph has embarked on a number of initiatives in a bid to raise the literacy level of students, nationally.

When the UPP government took office in 2004, the nation faced serious issues as it relates to literacy.

As a result, the UPP government grants scholarships to Antiguans & Barbudans for degree studies at home and abroad. Over 1000 students are currently on scholarships throughout the world, as a result of the government’s programme of building a knowledge based society.

Since 2004, over 18.5 million dollars has been disbursed on scholarships through the Board of Education.

Through the Board of Education, the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Programme, the range of scholarships offered has increased.

Teacher education has also received added attention form the UPP government; with the provision of professional development training, and an Associate Degree programme.
