PM Turns Up The Heat
Election campaigns for the two main political parties, the ruling United Progressive Party and the opposition Antigua Labour Party will undoubtedly intensify with the announcement of Parliament being dissolved today.
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer made the announcement while wrapping up his presentation at Sunday's Blue Wave rally, paving the way for general elections in Antigua and Barbuda.
After a lengthy speech detailing accomplishments in his constituency and as Prime minister, Spencer taunted the crowd about removing the date from his side pocket into his front pocket, again hinting that a date for general elections would be called soon.
With the announcement about Parliament, Governor General Dame Louise Lake will now issue a writ to carry out that request.
The PM then has 90 days in which to set a date for general elections, and this must be given with 21 days' notice.
"The dissolution of Parliament is the first step toward announcing the election date, dubbed Justice Day," said the prime minister.
He indicated that Justice Day would be soon, which has left some members of the UPP speculating that the date might be revealed at an event being planned for Thursday.
Sunday's Blue Wave Rally was held to officially launch the four candidates in Zone Two: Lenworth Johnson in City South; MP Winston Williams Jr in Rural South; Bertrand Joseph for St Mary's North MP and representative for Rural West, Baldwin Spencer.
Zone Two is the final zone to be launched in a series of whistle-stop events spanning the past four weeks.
