It is also intended to be one of the main communications tools that will be used to raise the awareness of tourism activities among Antiguans and Barbudans.
Blackman also explained that the site will serve as a medium through which the ministry will disseminate information on the development of standards in the tourism sector.
It will also be possible for individuals to give their feedback to what they see. The ministry’s partners, however, will not be left out as Blackman noted that links to various industry partners’ Web sites would be placed on the site.
Dr. Edmond Mansoor, minister of information, broadcasting and telecommunications, congratulated the Ministry of Tourism, its staff and the IT Department of the Ministry of Information for the successful completion of their project.
He explained that the Internet has tremendous potential and this must be harnessed in a way that will benefit Antigua and Barbuda and its economy.
Dr. Mansoor also called for the Web site to be updated regularly. He advised the ministry to get someone, either a staff member or possibly a tourism cadet, to fulfil the role of performing daily updates to the site so that it may always have current information available.
Sharon Peters, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, spoke on behalf of the Minister of Tourism, Harold Lovell, who was unable to attend due to prior engagements.
Peters called the event a happy day for the ministry and expressed her gratitude to Blackman who she said pushed for the project to be realised. She also stated that many projects were in the pipeline for tourism in 2009.
Though challenges would be unavoidable due to the global economic crisis, Peters said a lot of work would be done to maintain Antigua and Barbuda’s spot as a top tourism destination and that visitors to its shores would have a great experience.
