Welcome To Mount St John's
Hundreds of invited guests turned out to witness the long-awaited opening of the Mount St John's Medical Centre (MSJMC) this morning.
"This is your hospital … I urge you to be proud of it and to take care of it," said Cottrille George, chairman of the board instituted to ensure the government's policies are implemented at the new state-of-the-art medical facility.
He said the MSJMC will be a lighthouse for expert medical treatment in the region, as Antiguan doctors and nurses possess the skills that will enable them to provide quality care.
Dispelling rumours that the medical facility will only cater to the rich, George stressed that all residents, irrespective of their economic standing, would be treated.
Minister of Health John Maginley said, "Visitors can come here knowing that if … they require medical care, they can receive it in short order."
Maginley dispelled suggestions that the opening was a political move designed to score electoral points for the ruling United Progressive Party. He said the government had to ensure everything was done right, and in the right order.
The audience stood to welcome Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer to the podium, and amidst a roar of applause, he said the medical center represents a quantum leap in quality of heath care.
"The MSJMC represents a successful collaborative effort between Complant (the contractors), the Chinese government and the government of Antigua and Barbuda," he said.
He said the transfer of patients would begin this Saturday.
Invited guests gathered on the facility's spacious rear patio for the event. After unveiling the plaque, and the ribbon cutting, attendees were invited on a grand tour, which wrapped up with a cocktail in the hospital's courtyard.
