War On The Web: ALP vs UPP

Although Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer is yet to call general elections in Antigua and Barbuda, the two main political parties are hot on the campaign trail.

Taking advantage of the latest technological developments, the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) and the United Progressive Party (UPP) are engaged in a Political War on the World Wide Web.

The opposition ALP launched its official website http://www.votealp.com/ last week.

A few days later, at the UPP’s Annual Christmas extravaganza, the party announced the launch of its website http://www.uppantigua.com/.

Displaying the UPP’s Sunshine Logo and the party’s new tagline “Right Track, Right Direction, Re-elect UPP, the site features segments covering a variety of topics.

“On its welcome page, visitors are invited to meet the candidates and learn how they're delivering on campaign promises made to their constituents. “The site also features the latest news, cartoons, videos and the like at the Media Center or read blogs,” said a member of Team UPP.

Political websites is one of the new weapons political teams are utilizing to reach out not only to residents but also Antiguans and Barbudans overseas.

On the same night of the UPP launch the ALP’s website experienced some technical trouble and featured this message “the server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.”

The site was however, up and running by the very next day.

A member of Team UPP described the temporary unavailability of the ALP website as “a demonstration of the UPP’s lack of consistency and inability to get things right.”

“If they can’t manage a simple website, how can they be expected to manage a country especially with the possibility of economic turbulence in the near future,” he questioned.

A local expert on the constitution says General Elections in Antigua and Barbuda are constitutionally due by June, 2009.

The Electoral Commission, however, maintains that elections are due by March 2009.
