Following the devastation which resulted from the passage of Hurricane Omar, the UPP Government has resolved to improve the capacity of the National Office of Disaster Services to enable it to enhance disaster management and mitigation, and to allow it to respond promptly when citizens and residents are struck by natural disasters.
A UPP Government will:
- Work to ensure that standard operating procedures are enforced across the board – Ministries, departments, statutory bodies and the private sector
- Support the National Emergency Operations Centre in a systematic retrofitting of existing facilities to reduce the impact of natural and manmade disasters on the economy, infrastructure, job security, etc.
- Construct a National Disaster Office
- Construct hurricane shelters in Bolans and Pigotts
- Recruit Disaster Relief Officers charged with identifying and assisting disaster victims and
- Enhance community resilience in Antigua & Barbuda in the face of adverse effects of climate change and disaster
